There are two main reason why a cylinder will need replacement:
1. Elevator Code
2. Failure
Beside failure and Code changes some building are being proactive and changing their depending on the age to prevent an unplanned down elevator and repair.
Let start by discussing the changes on the code. Elevator cylinders used to be manufactured with a single bottom. Around 1978 they became double bottom. The double bottom is a safety feature that allows the oil to escape slowly, in case of a bottom plate rupture, resulting in a controlled slow speed of descent. The result is a safer ride for passengers
An elevator cylinder replacement can be a lengthy process depending on the size of the cylinder.
What happens during a cylinder replacement?
* The elevator car will need to be suspended and disconnected from the piston.
* Piston is removed from the cylinder
* Oil is removed from the cylinder and the cylinder is removed from the hole.
* The hole is cleaned out and space permitting PVC is installed
* The new cylinder is installed and plumbed.
* Re-install piston & oil line
This process is time consuming and there are complications that can arise like an uncased hole, out of plumb hole, and water intrusion to name a few. Our experience has prepared us to deal with all the complications that might arise.
Please give us a call if you have any questions.
